Individual Treatment

The individual therapy appointment generally lasts about 45 minutes. It is time that is exclusively yours and together we would identify how that time can be utilized most productively. It is important to understand that therapy has both benefits and risks. The benefits can be better relationships at home and work, solutions to problems, stress reduction and increased productivity. The risks can be that when I ask you to explore your past, it may produce feelings of sadness, frustration, anger, and guilt. These are the emotions that are most likely leading to your current behaviors that you, and possibly others, find troublesome. Treatment will focus on who you are today, how the past has lead you to become that person, and how you would like your future to look. We will look closely at the choices you make on a daily basis that drive your decisions and behaviors.

It is difficult to suggest how long or how many sessions it may take for you to experience a difference or improvement. We will be identifying the goals and treatment from the first session and I will generally ask you on several occasions how you imagine you might feel in order to know that you are ready to end treatment. The decision to end treatment is always one that we should make together.

If you were receiving psychotherapeutic services from another provider, it would not be appropriate to enter into additional treatment. It would be important for you to conclude with your previous provider prior to initiating treatment with me.

As the session is exclusively yours, it is important for you to do some research prior to your first appointment. I do not bill insurance companies; you should know exactly what your coverage is and what you will be reimbursed for. I will provide monthly invoices for you to submit to your insurance company. Each therapy session is $85 per hour. You are responsible to pay that fee at the beginning of each session. It is important that we end the therapy hour with you thinking about what we have discussed and what the plan for the upcoming week will be. We generally will meet on a once a week basis, but there may be occasion when additional sessions are necessary. This will also be mutually agreed upon.

It is important that you provide notice if you must cancel a session. 72 hours is generally a considerate amount of time. If we can reschedule the appointment for that week, you will not be charged. If we are not able to reschedule and you provide less than 72 hours notice, then that session must be paid for at the start of the next therapy hour. I will always notify you at least a week in advance if I am going to be unavailable for the next scheduled session.
